Magazine Project

December 3, 2008 - Leave a Response

Ok, so we now have to redesign a Magazine article (4 page spread) including all the original text.

I’ll need to look into InDesign a lot more for this project as I have little footing in it. Tomorrow; pop down to the library to look through existing articles, pick a crap one. If that fails go down to Borders and browse the endless amounts there.

Quick links to read later:

Note that the last one looks particularly useful, look more for that.

Also do some research on the legibility of Sans/Serif fonts and which to use in Magazines.

Book Design

November 15, 2008 - Leave a Response

Onto designing the cover of a book (front cover, spine, back cover). The catch is it has to be typography based (well otherwise it would make the fact that this unit is ‘Typography’ redundant). Initial ideas are to redesign (oh yeh, you have to redesign* a book cover) Sabriel, Gone with the Wind or The Hobbit/LOTR. The latter seems to cliche’ and obvious, especially with the ease of using an ‘o’ as the ring. Sabriel had some ideas bouncing around my head, mainly due to the heavy use of symbols in the story, which the main character ‘plucks’ from a metaphorical river. The concept would be a stack of words which eventually filter out to the text ‘Sabriel’.

When the Wind Blows, Robert Pattison, usually has the direct reference as it’s cover (of wind, wings and feathers) however another very common theme within the book is that of stem cell research. The imagery of which is strong, emotional and could be easily represented with type (with cells being of an oval/circular shape).

Typography and Logo Design

October 29, 2008 - Leave a Response

Looks like I have to create a logo design based around myself.

The logo design should be ina  standard font so I’m thinking of Franklin Gothic Demi at this moment in time, albeit just because it’s the one I use most often and care for. Unsure whether to incorporate colour into it, it seems like a useful option but obviously it would be best not to rely on the colour to speak too much, as there will most likely come a time when a logo has to be printed in B&W.

Aaaanyway looking into logo design here’s a few links to read up on at a later date:
